NEWS ITEM:
Nearly three years passes since the tragic events [of the bloody
suppression of pro-democracy students in Iran] of July 1999, and the
Mohammadi brothers [who were arrested in that suppression] continue to
perish in [Evin] prison. The imprisonment of the Mohammadi
brothers continues as one of the brothers, Manuchehr Mohammadi, an
economics student of Tehran University, suffers from mouth and gum
disease. Akbar Mohammadi, the other brother and a student of heath
sciences, also suffers from kidney and liver disease. While
the prison’s medical unit has confirmed the Mohammadi brothers'
ailment and has approved their release from prison, the judiciary
authorities refuse to allow their release. The Judiciary must be
asked why it refuses to allow the transfer of the Mohammadi brothers to
a hospital or their temporary release? Why is the Judiciary
denying them minimum humanitarian consideration? Why is it that
the Revolutionary Tribunal treats the cases of these two brothers in a
particularly unfair manner and has deprived them of their undeniable
rights? Indeed, what justice is being served by this Judiciary [of
the Islamic Republic]?
