Mossadegh Conference: May 3 to May 6, 2001 Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill. A Conference in Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Mossadegh’s Government (1951-1953) The Mossadegh conference was held at Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill. from May 3 to May 6 , 2001. It was well attended by many well-known Iranian scholars from different parts of the world. It was certainly a more academic conference rather than a political one. Among the participants in the conference, they were, Dr. Nasser Pakdaman, University Professor, a journalist and a prominent voice of opposition in exile, Paris; Dr. Mansour Farhang, University Professor, a 'Melli' writer and a scholarly voice of opposition out of the country; Iraj Pezeshkzad, a popular author & journalist; Dr. Karim Lahiji, formerly vice president of Iran Bar Association, Legal scholar and Human Rights activists; Mr. Nemat Mirzazadeh (Azarm ) , a ' Melli 'writer and poet; Dr. Fakhreddin Azimi, Dr. Cyrous Bina, Dr. Janet Afari ,Dr. Yervan Abrahamian, Mehrdad Darvishpor, Sweden, University Professors, scholars, writers and authors in Iranian issues and history; Mr. Hassan Nazih, formerly President of Iran Bar Association, a prominent Iranian opposition to the regime in exile; Mahmoud Enayat, a writer and journalist and an old timer INF journalist; Ali Shahandeh, a legal scholar, Sweden; Dr. Bagher Samsamy, a pediatrician, and a prominent figure and activist of INF abroad and an INF old timer; Mrs. Shayagan, widow of the late Dr. Ali Shayagan, a close aid to Dr. Mossadegh; Mr. Nosratollah Amini, one of the INF old timers and Mayor of Tehran at Mossadegh time, and many other personalities. The conference of Mossadegh was organized by ' Melli ' thinking group (Mossadeghies) headed by Mr. Hooshang Keshavarz Sadr, an old timer of INF and a social science researcher, Paris and Dr. Hamid Akbari, Professor at Northwestern University, a 'Melli ' activist; The conference was well organized and professionally ran. Most subjects were about Mossadegh's accomplishments, his vision and contributions to freedom and Democracy in Iran. There were some discussion of Nationalization of oil, Events of 28 Mordad (August ’53 Coup d'etat) and more. There was also a panel on student movements in Iran past and present. Among the participants was Mr. Mohajeri nejad who left Iran not long ago and presently lives here in the US. Over all this was a successful conference on Iran. Many of the participants are the last of great thinkers and scholars of a generation that unfortunately is very close to being extinct. Most of these people were to some degree involved in the process of the greatest change in the history of Iran. The conference celebrated the late Dr. Ali Shayegan and Mr. Nosrattollah Amini for their lifetime achievement for better living of the Iranian people. The detail reports will be out in a book form by the organizers of the conference. It is important to add that the expenses of the conference which was probably close to $50, 000.00 was paid by well to do Iranians, namely and mostly Iranian physician residing in the US. ( this amount covered all expenses namely fair trip and lodging for many personalities which could not attend the conference without these accommodations) And these contributions made it possible that the largest gathering of Mossadeghies and their guests scholars to take place out of Iran.
