SIGNATORIES TO THE LETTER TO 
THE IRANIAN AUTHORITIES


In an unprecedented collective action, more than six hundred world scientists have signed a letter addressed to the Islamic President, Mr. Mohammad Khatmai, urging him to free twenty imprisoned Iranian students who have been subjected to torture and harsh treatment. List of signatories will be sent in a follow-up E-mail. Please distribute this important international call on Mr. Khatami as widely as possible.

His Excellency:

I write you in the name of the more than six hundred scientists and academics from all over the world who are listed below.

We are greatly concerned about the fate of twenty one imprisoned students (list attached), many of whom are reported to be held under very hard prison conditions. We are particularly concerned about the situation of Mr. Ali Afshari, whose recent confession after five months in prison without access to his lawyer is highly suspect.

We strongly urge you that Mr. Ali Afshari, as well as other prisoners of conscience, be released from prison. Meanwhile they should be treated humanely. given immediate access to their families and lawyers, as well as be provided with medical treatment.

The continued treatment of these students, some of whom appear to be detained solely for their attendance at a conference in Berlin and others for peacefully expressing their views, is against all international rules.

We look very much forward to a positive response to our appeal.

List of Students:

1) Mr. Manuchehr Mohammadi, head of the National Union of University Students and Alumni. Arrested and imprisoned at Evin prison since July 1999 (following the massive student uprising against the killing of a fellow student). He is charged with "acting against national security, put under duress, subjected to forced confession and periods of solitary confinement, and repeatedly and severely beaten. He suffers from gum and kidney disease.

2) Mr. Heshmattolah Tabarzadi, head of the Islamic Association of University Students and Alumni and head of the United Student Front and head of the Democratic Front of Iranian People. Once arrested in June 1999 and later released, he was re-arrested and imprisoned at an unknown location since April 2001. It is feared that he is being subjected to torture, psychological pressures and solitary confinement.

3) Mr. Akbar Mohammadi, brother of Mr. Manuchehr Mohammadi and a member of the National Union of University Students and Alumni. Arrested since July 1999 and imprisoned at Evin prison. He has been most severely tortured and beaten during the first year of his imprisonment, including declawing of his feet!. Originally he was sentenced to death which was later moved to a 5 year prison term under intense international and domestic pressure. He is currently suffering from kidney disease and loss of hearing.

4) Mr. Ahmad Batebi, a member of the United Student Front. Arrested since July 1999 and charged with acting against the national security for holding up the bloody shirt of a fellow student. He was first sentenced to death which was later moved to a 10 year prison term. Numerously tortured, he is currently suffering from severe back ache. 

5) Ms. Bahiyeh Jilani (a medical student). Arrested and imprisoned since July 1999. She has been savagely beaten and tortured including numerous occasions of flogging while suspended from ceiling. She is in immediate need of a visit and medical care.

6) Mr. Mehran Abdolbaghi: Arrested and imprisoned since July 1999. A member of Iran's National Front, he is charged with acting against national security.

7) Mr. Farrokh Shafiee: A member of the United Student Front. Imprisoned since July 1999 and sentenced to a 2 year prison term.

8) Mr. Behrouz Javid Tehrani. Arrested since July 1999 and is imprisoned in Karaj prison in harsh conditions. He is charged with acting against national security.

9) Mr. Kourosh Sehati: a member of the United Student Front. He was abducted in March 2001 and his whereabouts are not known.

10) Mr. Saeed Kashiloo: Member of the United Student Front. He was abducted in March 2001 and his whereabouts are not known.

11) Mr. Amir Abbasgholi Nejad: A student activist. Arrested since November 2000 and presently imprisoned at Evin prison on the charges of acting against national security.

12) Mr. Hossein Deldar: Member of the United Student Front. Imprisoned at Evin prison since July 1999. He is sentenced to a 15 year prison term. 

13) Mr. Rahim Ramezani: Member of the Democratic Front of Iranian People. Detained since April 2001 in an unknown location.

14) Mr. Hossein Yekta: Member of the United Student Front. Arrested and imprisoned at Evin prison since July 1999 under harsh conditions.

15) Mr. Hassan Ghadimi: Member of the Democratic Front of Iranian People.  Arrested since April 2001.

16) Mr. Ali Akbar Rahimi Far: Member of the Democratic Front of Iranian People. Arrested since April 2001.

17) Mr. Ali Afshari: A student leader of the Office for Consolidating Unity. Arrested since November 2000 and imprisoned in an unknown location. Mr. Afshari has been subjected to harsh treatment and has been subjected to
forced televised confessions.

18) Mr. Siavosh Haji Hassan: Member of the United Student Front.  Detained since April 2001 in an unknown location.

19) Mr. Mahmoud Shoshtari: Member of the United Student Front. Arrested since June 2000.

20) Mr. Mohammad Reza Kasrai: Member of the United Student Front. Most likely arrested since June 2000. Needs immediate medical treatment.
